Iron-Rich Tahini & Cocoa Cookies

These soft, melt-in-the-mouth cookies are a nutritional powerhouse for growing littles. By swapping refined sugars for grape molasses (pekmez), you’re providing a natural source of iron and potassium, while the tahini offers healthy fats and calcium essential for bone development.

The Stats

  • Meal Type: Nutrient-dense snack
  • Age Range: +24 months
  • Dietary: Nutritious, Dairy-Free
  • Cooking Method: Oven-baked

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Raw Tahini (ensure it’s well-stirred)
  • 1 tbsp Grape Molasses (Pekmez)
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 3-4 tbsp Oat flour (blended oats) or Cornstarch
  • 1-2 tbsp Unsweetened Cocoa powder
  • Optional: Finely crushed walnuts or hemp seeds (for topping)

Pro-Tip: If serving to little ones under 24 months, swap the molasses in that recipe for half a mashed ripe banana. You’ll get the sweetness and the “stick” needed for the dough & ensure the “crushed nuts” are ground into a fine powder to eliminate any choking hazards.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prep the Base: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the tahini, grape molasses, and the egg until the mixture is glossy and smooth.
  2. Add the Structure: Fold in the oat flour (or starch). Start with 3 tablespoons; if the batter feels too runny to hold a shape, add the fourth.
  3. The Chocolate Swirl: Sift in the cocoa powder. Whisk thoroughly until you have a rich, dark, and uniform batter.
  4. Scoop & Shape: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Drop small, tablespoon-sized portions of the batter onto the sheet. These don’t spread much, so you can keep them relatively close.
  5. The Finishing Touch: Lightly press your finely crushed nuts or seeds onto the top of each cookie.
  6. Bake: Slide into a preheated oven at 180°C. Bake for 10–12 minutes. You’re looking for a slight “cracked” appearance on the surface.
  7. Cool Down: Let them cool completely on the tray. These cookies are very delicate when warm but firm up into a perfect “fudgy” texture once cooled.
