Transitioning to finger foods is a major milestone, and these Avocado & Cheddar Straws are the perfect addition to your toddler’s menu. Naturally soft on the inside with a gentle “grip” on the outside, they are specifically designed for little hands practicing their pincer grasp.
Why We Love This for Toddlers
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), healthy fats are essential during the first two years of life for rapid brain development.
- Brain-Boosting Fats: Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats, which support central nervous system development.
- Protein for Growth: The combination of egg and cheddar cheese provides high-quality protein and calcium for bone health.
- Textural Success: These straws offer a soft, manageable texture that dissolves easily, reducing the risk of choking compared to hard, crunchy crackers.
- Iron Absorption: The inclusion of lemon juice provides Vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron from other dietary sources.
Ingredients
- 1 Ripe Avocado (pitted and peeled)
- 1 Large Egg (lightly beaten)
- 1/2 cup Finely Grated Mild Cheddar (choose low-sodium if possible)
- 1 tsp Fresh Lemon Juice (prevents browning and adds Vitamin C)
- Optional Topping: A sprinkle of black cumin (Nigella seeds) or sesame seeds for added sensory texture.
Instructions
- Prep the Base: In a medium mixing bowl, mash the avocado with the lemon juice until completely smooth. Ensure there are no large lumps to prevent the piping tip from clogging.
- Combine: Fold in the grated cheddar cheese and the beaten egg. Mix until the batter is consistent and holds its shape.
- Pipe: Transfer the mixture into a piping bag (or a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off). On a parchment-lined baking sheet, pipe the mixture into 3-inch “straw” shapes.Tip: Keep the straws about the width of an adult finger to make them easy for toddlers to hold.
- Garnish: Lightly sprinkle with black cumin seeds if using.
- Bake: Place in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15–20 minutes. The straws should be firm to the touch and slightly golden on the edges.
- Cool & Serve: Allow to cool completely on the tray to firm up. Serve alongside a yogurt-based dip or enjoy as-is!
