🥑 A Healthy Avocado Bread Recipe for the Little One
Avocado is full of great fats for growing brains. The best recipes for little ones are usually low in sugar and salt. perfect for baby-led weaning (BLW) or a toddler snack.
Simple, No-Sugar Avocado Loaf
This recipe relies on the natural sweetness of applesauce and the moisture of the avocado.
Yields: 1 small loaf (best for mini loaf pans or muffins)
Prep time: 10 mins
Cook time: 25-30 mins
Ingredients
- 1 very ripe avocado (about 1/2 cup mashed)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 large egg (or a flax egg for a vegan option)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 1 cup whole wheat flour (or half whole wheat, half all-purpose for a lighter texture)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (you can omit this entirely for babies under one year)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for flavor)
- 2 tablespoons milk ( almond, oat) – add more if the batter seems too thick.
Instructions
- Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a small loaf pan (about 6 ×3 inches) or line a muffin tin
- Wet Mix: In a medium bowl, mash the avocado until completely smooth. Whisk in the applesauce, egg, vanilla extract, and milk until fully combined and the mixture is light green.
- Dry Mix: In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking soda, salt (if using), and cinnamon.
- Combine: Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Do not overmix; stir just until the flour streaks are no longer visible. Overmixing makes the bread tough.
- Bake: Pour the batter into your prepared pan.
- For a small loaf: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- For muffins: Bake for 15-20 minutes.
- Cool: Let the bread cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Tips for Your Little One
- Texture Boost: For an older toddler, you can gently fold in a handful of finely chopped walnuts/pecans (if they’ve been introduced to nuts safely) or shredded zucchini for extra nutrients.
- Serving BLW Style (6+ months): Cut the cooled loaf into thick “finger” strips (about the width of your adult finger) so they can easily grasp and gnaw on it.
- Storing: This bread is best stored wrapped tightly in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or you can slice and freeze it for quick snacks later!
It’s a great way to incorporate healthy fats without the presence of refined sugar. Win-win.
